Message from Dr. (Vaidya) Lina

Dear Friend of Ayurveda,DrLinaThakar_Ayurveda

It is my pleasure to introduce our very first newsletter, and with great pleasure I would like to further mention that it is very auspicious time of the year that we are introducing it. Monday Oct 24th was the first day of the biggest & most important festival of India ‘Diwali’, the festival of lights. Additionally it is annually celebrated all over the world by Ayurvedic physicians, Vaidyas, as the day of Lord Dhanvantari – Dhan-Van- Tari, The God Of Ayurveda (The God of Medicine) Hence the occasion that the first newsletter reaches to all Ayurveda Readers is more than perfect time.

We at Ayurveda Wellness Center & Holistic Spa celebrated this day with Authentic Auspicious Pooja ceremony and prayed for health, wellness for all of us. Additionally we prayed for health and Wellness for Mother Nature as well, that if Mother Nature is healthy and well, we all remain healthy, well & happy. Enjoy the photos of the Auspicious Pooja Ceremony here.

I take this opportunity to dedicate the first newsletter to my Mother, Nalini (the name itself means Lotus, which is a symbol of health and wellness) who has been my first inspiration to lead an Ayurvedic Lifestyle.  She was the best example of ‘LOVE & COMPASSION’, also a true Ayurveda Lifestyle promoter in our family hence in our family it was very rare time someone fell sick and also further took any medicines.  No one in our family took any medicines including my father who is in his 80s today and in perfect health, he does not need any medicines at this age. With her blessings and love, I complete my 20 years of Ayurveda practice in 2012 and further continue to share Ayurvedic wisdom with all of you.

Ayurveda is about loving yourself and living a lifestyle in tune with Nature, thus swimming with stream, not opposite!  Ayurveda teaches you how to balance yourself on physical level, mental level & spiritual level naturally so the imbalance is PREVENETED in the first place.

Living live in tune with nature means your biological rhythm should be in tune with nature’s rhythm. Hence with this newsletter I take the opportunity to introduce you all how to take your first steps towards living in tune with nature, your true journey to perfect wellness.

I welcome you all to join me to this holistic path of perfect health & Wellness.

With Love & Compassion

Prepare for Vata season

Prepare for Vata SeasonVATA DOSHA – Ether (Space) & Air: The force of MOVEMENT, also the main governing force.  Ayurvedic philosophy is based upon the 3 energies called DOSHAS, Vata, Pitta & Kapha.  These 3 doshas when in balance state promotes Health & Wellness and when they are in imbalance they start the disease process. Every person has unique combination of these doshas called ‘Prakruti’ your natural unique constitution.  In nature also the 3 doshas have a yearly cycle, which we experience as the seasons.  In Ayurveda, climatic changes affect the status of doshas in human body. According to Ayurvedic Calendar there are 3 seasons, Vata season, Pitta Season & Kapha season.

In North America, Vata season is approximately October through mid-February.  Vata Season elements are space and air. These constantly moving forces bring the rushing winds of Autumn and the clear, crisp, cloudless days of early winter.  Within each season the most prevalent dosha, in Fall season Vata dosha, accumulates to some degree within each individual. These accumulations bring about certain types of imbalances that one experiences such as dryness, indigestion in the forms of gases, bloating and increased anxiety levels on mental level. Simple lifestyle adjustments and awareness can help pacify Vata dosha in body thus further prevents progression of imbalance.

Why Vata dosha is governing force and where does in resides in me?    Vata dosha itself is a PRANA – The Life force Energy

Vata is the force that governs all movement in our body: the action of the breath and lungs, the nerve impulses, the heartbeat, the expansion and contraction of muscles, the transport of nutrients and wastes and the microscopic movements of cells.  In fact, Vata also controls the movement and functionality of the other 2 doshas and therefore controls all of life’s activity. If Vata is aggravated it brings imbalance in other two doshas hence brings imbalance in perfect health.

Recommendations, Suggestions & Home Remedies

Ayurvedic Nutrition:  As season changes we need to make few simple changes to our eating and dietary cycle. We often make the mistake of eating the same foods year round without realizing that with the changing seasons, our diets must also change. This is particularly important in Vata season.  Included here are some simple Ayurvedic Nutrition Tips for Fall/VATA season!

Ayurvedic Nutrition

~Since Vata season brings cold and dry elements, start eating warmer or steamed foods to balance and nourish these effects.
~Favor the tastes of sweet, sour and salty this season, but always use moderation. These foods enhance the energy in the body and immune system.
~Avoid: cold foods, salads, raw foods, soda, ice cream & choose: warmer, heavier, cooked foods in proper proportion.
~Eat three meals a day.
~Drink calming herbal teas such as ginger, cardamom, cinnamon
~Drink 6-7 glasses of room temperature or warm water daily
~Favor vegetables such as cooked asparagus, beets, cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, green chilies, mustard greens, chick peas, and zucchini quinoa, rice  and amaranth make excellent grains for the season
~Add spices to you meals such as ginger, fennel, cumin and coriander
~Most dairy is fine except hard cheeses, plain yogurt and ice cream. Warm milk with pinch of cardamom is recommended.
~Choose fruits such as sweet apples, avocados, grapes, mangos and strawberries
~The most important tip is to maintain the routine in meal times.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle:  Ether (Space), the element in Vata dosha brings increased stress, hence the basic principle in Ayurveda is to connect with cosmic consciousness which brings grounding. When Vata is out of balance, the force of mobility/constant changes can increase the sense of feeling scattered.  When one connects with cosmic consciousness by doing simple 10-15 min meditation along with performing simple Pranayama- breathing techniques, one can regain the balance and clarity. Vata is excellently controlled with these tools.  Included here are some Lifestyle Tips for Fall/Vata season!

  • Establish a routine. Start with couple of things that you can do at the same time every day.
  • Go to bed at around the same time every night, ideally around 10pm. Sleep is an essential part of life.
  • Stay warm.
  • Enjoy hot baths with relaxing and nourishing oils.
  • Take gentle yoga classes to connect with your breath and body.
  • Keep a journal with you while in transit. Write down all those thoughts, dreams, lists, last-minute to-do's, as they occur to you. By keeping a journal on hand, you can relieve your busy mind from some of its burdens.

Meditation

Ayurvedic Meditation

Meditation: Meditation is the practice of becoming one with cosmic consciousness.

Meditation Tip:
Please keep in mind that there is no wrong way to do this.   Any technique you may follow will help you connect with the Purusha- the choice less, passive awareness. Creating awareness in each action helps you realize your own consciousness. Consciousness is ADHYATAMA in Ayurveda, a path to unite with GOD. True Path to love yourself, to love the GOD in you!  Start with 10 min in the morning and or bedtime followed by 20 Pranayamana breaths as a simple addition to you daily routine and slowly develop the practice.
