Panchakarma FAQs

What is the Panchakarma Detox program?

The Panchakarma Detox and Healing program is a process of removing deep seated toxins from all channels of the body as well as promoting emotional release. This customized, deep healing process is offered weekly at Ayurveda Wellness Center & Holistic Spa, located in a new, modern facility in the fast growing Robinson Township area nestled in the beautiful and healing city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. (Vaidya) Lina Thakar, a true Ayurvedic physician, created the Panchakarma program to help you experience relief from your physical pain and the emotional turbulence that often accompanies it.

The Panchakarma program is based on the 5,000-year-old medical system, Ayurveda,  which originated in India. Each day, you will experience a customized Ayurvedic therapy in the loving hands of our Ayurvedic technicians. Additional private Ayurveda dosha yoga classes and basic nutrition classes are offered upon request (additional charges applies).

Panchakarma is a powerful Ayurvedic cleansing process that helps the body release accumulated toxins and stress. You will receive daily Panchakarma therapies to restore your natural state of balance and calm. Each therapy is tailored to your unique mind-body constitution, using specific essential oils and natural herbs to purify and nurture you at the deepest cellular level.

Who can benefit from Perfect Wellness Panchakarma at Ayurveda Wellness Center?

The Panchakarma program provides immediate and long-term benefits to anyone seeking improved health and vitality, including those coping with:

  • Physical or emotional pain
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Chronic pain and fibromyalgia
  • Job burnout and career stress
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or other digestive problems
  • Body image and weight issues
  • Cancer and chemotherapy
  • Grief and loss

What happens during the Panchakarma Detox and Healing program?

Your Panchakarma experience begins with a private consultation by Dr. (Vaidya) Lina to understand your dosha and your level of accumulated toxins. Dr. Lina then recommends and customizes a Panchakarma program to meet your unique needs. You will experience your first Ayurvedic therapy and begin the Panchakarma cleansing process to bring you into a state of deep relaxation.

In the week that follows, each day you will receive Ayurvedic massage treatment and Panchakarma therapy. Fresh fruit, herbal tea are available while complementary Ayurvedic food is offered after the therapy.

The final day of the program is a devoted to rejuvenation and self-nourishment.

At this point, you've released an enormous amount of physical and emotional toxicity, and are beginning the Ayurvedic process known as Rasayana—a Sanskrit term meaning "that which nourishes." You will be pampered with a restorative Ayurvedic massage treatment. A post program protocol is recommenced to replenish your body with herbs, natural foods, meditation, and yoga.

What can I expect?

The Panchakarma cleansing process affects the whole person. Thus, during the program, you may notice changes on mental, physical, and emotional levels. Many of our clients experience a "healing crisis."This is a normal part of the healing process, and may be seen as a beneficial step toward optimal health.  You may also loose 2-5 pounds of weight during Panchakarma Detox.

What is a healing crisis?

A healing crisis occurs when a large quantity of toxins that have been locked in our tissues for years are released into the system for elimination. As these toxins are expelled, you may experience insomnia, heaviness, aching, or general discomfort and flu-like symptoms. You may also develop a feverish feeling, which is simply your body’s way of burning up toxic waste. You may notice some emotional mood swings or experience intense feelings. Do not be alarmed—this is both a natural and necessary part of tissue cleansing. Make time to discuss with your Ayurvedic Physician or facilitator on a daily basis while undergoing Panchakarma treatments and they will help to walk you through the process.

What should I do at home?

During the first stage of your Panchakarma therapy, when you are undergoing daily massage treatment and steam baths, there are several things you can do to facilitate your body’s internal cleansing:

  • Drink plenty of pure water, soothing herbal teas (be sure they are caffeine-free) and fresh, organic fruit juices.
  • Eat light foods in moderate amounts, and increase your daily rest.
  • Be gentle and nurturing to yourself.
